On April 13, Quad/Graphics and The Harris Poll published "The New Rules of Retail Trust in the Age of AI," the third wave in their "Return of Touch" series. The headline finding: 75% of American adults would lose trust in both AI shopping tools and the brands behind them if AI recommendations turned out to be influenced by paid placements. Quad labels the risk a "trust cliff" — the point where AI's neutrality is revealed as purchased and both the platform and the brand lose credibility in one step.

What the Quad-Harris study measured
The Harris Poll conducted the survey online in the US between February 5 and 7, 2026, sampling 2,180 American adults: 370 Gen Z (18-29), 715 Millennials (30-45), 560 Gen X (46-61), and 535 Boomers (62+). The fieldwork sits as the third wave of Quad's "Return of Touch" series, following waves in May 2025 and October 2025. Quad released the results on April 13, 2026 under the title "The New Rules of Retail Trust in the Age of AI." The framing argues consumer trust has shifted from "which brand do I trust" to "which layer do I trust."
The Trust Cliff, specifically
The number worth staring at is 75%. That share of respondents would lose trust in both the AI tool and the brand behind it if an AI recommendation turned out to be paid-influenced. The symmetry matters: consumers are not separating "the AI tricked me" from "the brand bought the AI." The secondary numbers that matter more
Two findings in the same study are less famous than 75% but more actionable. 68% would use AI shopping tools less if pricing were clearer elsewhere, meaning adoption is propped up by comparison friction, not affection for AI. 66% would rely less on AI agents if shopping itself were more enjoyable.
Together the numbers describe a utility-driven economy, not a loyalty-driven one. Consumers use AI because the alternative is worse. That makes the trust cliff doubly dangerous: when neutrality breaks, there is no loyalty reservoir to cushion the loss.
